Principles
of Painless Mingling, Part 1
By Anne
Schwab
Even for those of us in communications,
entering a room full of unfamiliar people can be daunting. I
remember several business gatherings where I unceremoniously signed in, made a
beeline for the food table and mused, "Just how long must I be here?" "Must?" It took me years to realize, "I want to be here.” Let's look at the Principles of Painless Mingling.
1. Got the
Jitters? Many people you meet at an event are just as nervous as you. Even
people like me who appear totally
outgoing and self-confident sometimes have trouble initiating a conversation.
Truth be known, I’m an introverted extrovert! And it helps to know others are a
bit shy too.
2. Breaking
Away. Fight the natural tendency to hang out with those you already know.
We feel more secure in their company; time to step out of your comfort zone.
3. A Face in
the Crowd. Fear of rejection often prevents us from approaching strangers.
Instead of focusing on ourselves, focus on someone else. Notice something
interesting about a face, a smile, a stunning outfit. Then approach the person
with a smile and a conversation opener, "Love your suit."
4. Be Genuine.
Ask questions: "Where do you live?" "What do you do for a living?" "What do
you do for fun?" Concentrate on their answers. It is easy to recognize real interest.
Find out what you have in common and exchange business cards.
Go,
go, go. The more events I attend, the more comfortable I become and the more I
say, “Yes, I want to be here!
